Background to the Theme for Side Event by ICA Asia and Pacific

In recent years, incidences of natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis, forest fires, incessant rains, flooding, etc. have increased in the Asia and Pacific region dueto climate change. The Asia and Pacific region is the most disaster- prone region in the world and has the largest number of vulnerable population.

These disasters severely impact people’s lives and livelihoods and has profound effect on small businesses and agricultural communities. The brunt of the impact is borne by the vulnerable and economically disadvantaged, minorities, and women. Natural disasters have twin impact on women, they face disproportionate loss in terms of livelihoods and increase in burden ofdomestic responsibilities, often at the cost of their own health and wellbeing.

Climate change affects cooperatives in agricultural, fisheries, forestry and consumer sector which have a large membership base.

The effects of climate change are felt directly in the form of crop loss, lower productivity, soil erosion, depletion of forest cover and waterresources, and loss of cattle, resulting in increasing poverty and food insecurity. Efforts are needed for combating climate change by adopting mitigation measures, developing resilience and taking adaptive measures.

Though climate change in the form of natural disasters affect life and cooperative businesses individually, cooperatives have collectively taken steps to support those affected. Invoking Cooperative Principle 6 - Cooperation among Cooperatives and Principle 7- Concern for Community, ICA Asia and Pacific and its Committee on Women,Committee on Forestry, and members have undertaken steps in the past and continue to take initiatives with the objective to rebuild, strengthen and prepare cooperatives for thefuture.

Our side event on the theme, "Women in Cooperatives: Combating Climate Change Together' will cover two thematic sessions:

Session 1: Natural disasters in Asia-Pacific: Individual impact but collective response by cooperatives

Session 2: Safeguarding the future: Making people climate resilient by future proofing cooperatives

Under session 2, two sub-thematic areas would be covered:

Importance of climate friendly practices, processes, and products for women cooperators

Importance of forest conservation and natural resources management for climate acton, and role played by women cooperators
