The Indian cooperative movement is one of the largest in the work with coverage of 100% villages through 8,00,000 Primary Cooperatives, 33 State Cooperative Unions and 17 National Cooperative Federations. However, the absolute contribution of cooperatives to the national economy is not well documented. NCUI has initiated a study ‘Contribution of Indian Cooperatives to Country’s Economy’ intending to assess the contribution of cooperatives in India to the country’s economy, especially in terms of GDP and employment.

EY, a consulting firm, is carrying out the study and expects the report to be ready in December. To estimate the impact at the granular level, EY is looking to collect business performance data like turnover, output (in value terms), taxes paid, employment & livelihood generated, and wages paid. All data collected will be used for the study only the final output of the economic impact assessment will be put in the public domain.
