Celebrating Youth as Torchbearers of the Cooperative Identity

Virtual Event | 27-29 July 2021

PRESS RELEASE

ICA- AP launches Third Edition of Asia Pacific Cooperative Youth Summit (APCYS 3.0)

ICA-AP in collaboration with the ICA-EU Partnership, the ICA-AP Committee on Youth Cooperation (ICYC), and the ICA Domus Trust launches the third edition of the virtual Asia Pacific Cooperative Youth Summit (APCYS 3.0)

The Summit aims to bring together youth from different parts of the Asia-Pacific region and inculcate the culture of youth cooperativism.

APCYS 1.0, Youth Cooperatives and the Power of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, was held in Bali, Indonesia in 2016 and APCYS 2.0, Creative Skills, Cooperative Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable Development, in Cebu, the Philippines in 2018. The Summits provided a platform for youth in the region to interact with each other, hear stories from young coop entrepreneurs, pitch their ideas to start cooperatives, experience the social and cultural richness of the area, engage in team activities, and make friends from the cooperative movement.

Youth are the most important and dynamic segment of the population given their sheer numbers, ability to shape the future, power to bring about change, and their role as contributors to the economy. Youth can create an identity for themselves and move their countries forward. With identity at the core, the cooperative enterprise model has the potential to rally young people to take ownership, empower them to start businesses, inspire them to develop sustainable communities, and engage as active citizens.

APCYS 3.0 with the theme Celebrating Youth as Torchbearers of the Cooperative Identity will celebrate the role played by youth in cooperatives, showcase youth entrepreneurs, get ideas from youth about new forms of cooperatives, and inculcate a culture of youth cooperativism. It will provide a platform to:

  • Shine spotlight on youth who are at the forefront of starting new cooperatives to address needs in their communities
  • Explore how we make the cooperative identity a competitive advantage in attracting the young and in exploring new opportunities
  • Create an environment for youth to be engaged in work driven by passion and empathy towards others as well as cooperative values and principles, rather than competition and profit-making
  • Hear from youth, the new and sustainable enterprise ideas on cooperatives that cater to the needs and aspirations of the youth in their country, through Coop Pitch Competition.

A key highlight of APCYS is the Coop Pitch Competition, designed to find new and sustainable enterprise ideas on cooperatives led by youth. Participants get the opportunity to pitch cooperative business solutions catering to the needs and aspirations of the youth and community in their country to a panel of judges.  The top three winners are chosen based on a pre-determined evaluation criterion and will get cash prizes worth USD 3,000 (first prize, USD 1,500; second prize, USD 1,000; and third prize, USD 500), organizational support and direct access to key partners to further develop, validate and implement coop models developed.

The registrations for APCYS 3.0 are now open! Participants can register online at www.apyouthsummit.coop and those interested in Coop Pitch will have to apply separately for the competition.
