UN Resolution Calls for an International Year of Cooperatives every decade

On 15 December 2025, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/80/182,  recognising the important role cooperatives play in inclusive economic and social development around the world. Building on the success of the International Years of Cooperatives in 2012 and 2025, the UN has called for an International Year of Cooperatives to be held every ten years.

The resolution notes that cooperatives help reduce poverty and hunger, strengthen social inclusion, advance gender equality, and support climate action. It also recognises their contribution to achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, especially in improving the lives of Indigenous Peoples, rural communities, and other vulnerable groups. It encourages Governments to strengthen support for cooperatives through a better enabling environment, stronger laws and policies, improve access to finance and digital tools, support research and awareness, and promote equal participation and leadership for women.

The resolution further calls on Governments, relevant international organisations, specialised agencies, and local, national, and international cooperative organisations to continue observing the International Day of Cooperatives (CoopsDay) annually, on the first Saturday of July, as proclaimed by the General Assembly in its resolution 47/90. In 2026, CoopsDay will be celebrated on 4 July, with the theme to be announced soon. Read more.
