From Microfinance Roots, Koop Sahabat Joins ICA-AP as a New Member
Koperasi Sahabat Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (Koop Sahabat) Berhad joins ICAs growing network this quarter, bringing with it a distinct membership base: women entrepreneurs from Malaysia’s B40 income group, organised around shared capital rather than individual risk.
Koop Sahabat was formally established on 30 August 2012, the outcome of a Strategic Planning Meeting held that March between AIM’s (Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia) Board of Trustees, its Sahabat Representative Board, and management. The cooperative’s founding purpose has stayed consistent since: to build up its members’ human capital, sharpen operational efficiency, and channel annual income directly back to the women who make up its base — captured in its motto, “Dari Sahabat, Kepada Sahabat, Untuk Sahabat” (“From Friends, To Friends, For Friends”).
That founding idea has since grown into a diversified group of businesses. Under its VINTAGE framework, Visibility, Innovation & Digitalisation, Values & Governance, Business Transformation, Members, and Economy & Finance, Koop Sahabat now runs ventures spanning Islamic pawnbroking (Sahabat Ar-Rahnu), gold investment (Sahabat Gold), trading, property and healthcare, giving its members entry points into business, hospitality, agriculture and cosmetics alongside its original microfinance base.
For ICA-AP, Koop Sahabat’s membership adds a model worth watching closely: a cooperative built specifically to move women from micro-borrowers into shared owners of a diversified economic base — evidence, in a very concrete form, of what member-owned enterprise can do for financial inclusion.
ICA-AP looks forward to welcoming Koop Sahabat into the movement.
